Job Overview:

The Captain/Master of the vessel will report to the General Superintendent and Marine Superintendent of marine operations. He has overall responsibility for management of the vessel, including safe ship operation and pollution prevention.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • The Captain/Master is the manager and the Company’s representative on the vessel.

  • Responsible for the crew’s adherence to all USCG, Flag State, and Federal regulations, state laws and Company policies.

  • The Captain/Master will work with the Superintendent on construction matters to ensure compliance with JRM clients and promote general safety and harmony aboard the vessels.

  • Maintains and administers discipline to all vessel personnel.

  • Responsible for safe navigation of the vessel, overall operation of the vessel, maintenance, sanitation and habitation, as well as the safety of the crew and any visitors, at all times and in all weather conditions.

  • Oversees safety programs, supervises the crew, protects the environment, and complies with rules and regulations pertaining to the safe operation of an offshore construction vessel.

  • Use direct vision and aids to navigation to operate safely in a variety of conditions, day or night, in all weather.

  • Participates in two-way radio, computer, telephone, or speaker communication with other vessels, the crew, radio room operator, and other shore personnel.

  • Evaluates and approves deck officer, unlicensed bridge crew and Steward Department overtime.

  • Shall be trained, experienced, appropriately qualified and competent to take charge of a DP watch for any DP operation that the vessel may become engaged in.

  • Have a comprehensive understanding of the DP computer/control system in various modes of operation.

  • Shall be able to conduct annual trials, lead DP drills, train new DP personnel and assess the skill level of the new and existing DP personnel.

  • Have a general knowledge of vessel’s work activity.

  • Implement the safety and environmental protection policy of the company and motivate the crew in observation of that policy.

  • Review the SMS and reporting its deficiencies to the shore based management.

  • Acts as alternate Vessel Security Officer.

  • Ensure adherence to the Vessel Security Plan.

  • Ensure proper stability of the vessel for safe operations.

  • Review and authorize requisitions for: Bridge, Safety, Steward, and Admin. Department.

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent

  • Holds and maintains a USCG or Flag State license of Master, ocean, steam or motor, unlimited tonnage with radar observer endorsement.

  • Holds FCC and Flag State GMDSS license.

  • Holds current STCW endorsements applicable to vessel up which he/she is serving.

  • On DP vessels, must hold a Nautical Institute Unlimited DP Operations Certificate.

  • Holds current Vessel Security Officer Endorsement.
