Job Overview:

The Manager Mechanical Engineering manages professional employees and/or supervisors and is accountable for the performance and results of the Mechanical group. The role will address resource and operational challenges by appropriately adapting departmental plans and priorities. 

The Manager Mechanical Engineering will also be guiding the team and provide direction to achieve required discipline performance on the project.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Manage professional employees and supervisors within own discipline

  • Accountable for the performance and results of a team within own discipline

  • Apply technical expertise to improve effectiveness and provide guidance to employees in own area

  • Resolve operational problems that impact the effectiveness of area of responsibility

  • Develop and manage plans to achieve business objectives

  • Communicate moderately complex concepts, and influence business outcomes

  • Manage the performance of Discipline employees through goal setting, ongoing assessment, and coaching

  • Develop processes and procedures to implement functional strategies

  • Assess engineering scope during the bid stage and at the award

  • Direct senior personnel in determining the scope of work

  • Propose scope splits between disciplines, MDR Engineering offices, and/or subcontractors (as applicable) at the bid stage and at the award

  • Negotiate with other operational support groups to ensure clearly defined interfaces, deliverables, and project schedules

  • Attend project kickoff and review meetings, vendor, and engineering meetings, as required

  • Maintain close coordination with other engineering disciplines, Planning, Fabrication, Project Management Teams, and Global Engineering as required

  • Foster teamwork within and across functional teams

  • Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors, as required by PMT, for high-value/high-tech items to ensure project technical requirements, and delivery, installation, and commissioning requirements are met

  • Provide and direct bid assistance

  • Ensure availability and allocate discipline manpower resources as required to provide agreed deliverables and meet agreed schedules and budgets

  • Maintain historical norms to establish budgets and forecasts

  • Responsible for the group's Engineering Productivity

  • Prepare Discipline's budgets and forecasts

  • Manage and provide resources and support for software tools and services, including budgeting across disciplines and areas, per agreed allocation matrices

  • Maintain budgets, objectives, and professional standards within the discipline group

  • Responsible to meet DOE forecasts within schedule and budget

  • Review/approve departmental key documents and drawings such as:

  • Progress and productivity reports

  • Manhours/timesheet bookings

  • Requisition for software, computers, and other departmental expenses

  • Expense reports

  • Estimate for proposals, including cost, schedule, and manhour estimates and execution plans

  • Forecasting reports

  • Project-specific procedures and design reports

  • Discipline Technical Guidelines

  • Conduct staff feedback meetings

  • Identify and resolve technical, operational, and organizational problems that impact the effectiveness

  • Keep the Senior Manager and Project Management Teams apprised of all activities and concerns, technical, budgetary, and manpower related

  • Maintain Discipline procedures and technical standard guidelines in compliance with MDR procedures

  • Plan and recommend Discipline manpower, training/development, and assist in recruiting resources

  • Assist the Senior Manager in coordinating the training and development of Discipline personnel

  • Evaluate performance and recommend changes in classification and compensation of Discipline personnel

  • Participate in HAZOP, SIL, and Classification Studies, as necessary

  • Participate in 3D model reviews, as necessary

Reports to:

Functional: Engineering Senior Manager or Director

Liaise With: Managers and Supervisors of other Engineering / Design disciplines, Project Managers, Project Engineers, and

Project Management Teams; Offshore/Onshore Managers, Planning Managers, Yard Superintendent, Proposals Department,

Procurement Department, Safety Department, HR Department, QC, and Certification Group, External McDermott Offices,

Client Representatives, Vendor & Subcontractor Representatives

Supervises: Mechanical Engineers, Design Supervisor, and Designers; and support personnel within the discipline group

Essential Qualifications and Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Engineering

  • 15+ years of experience and proven leadership experience in oil and gas with major contractors or consultants

  • Detailed knowledge of Discipline design techniques and analysis methods, and detailed knowledge of the theory, content, and application of statutory codes and guidelines as applicable

  • Knowledgeable in project execution and managerial skills

  • Preferably Registered Professional Engineer or member of professional engineering society as applicable
