Job Overview:
The Principal Environmental Specialist will be tasked with solving complex Environment-related problems and work independently with minimal guidance. The Principal Environmental Specialist may be responsible for leading functional teams or projects and is regarded as a specialist in the Environmental field. As such, they must have in-depth environmental expertise and broad knowledge of the Environment discipline within the Health Safety Environment Security function.
Salary Range: 120,000 CAD to 155,000 CAD
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Be Familiar with company, facility, and project-specific HSES terms, requirements, and deliverables
Develop, lead implementation, and ensure Environmental Management System is in line with corporate, legislative, and client requirements, including compliance with international standards (e.g., ISO 14001environmental management system) and considering environmental critical activities (e.g., Engineering, Construction, Operations, and Contractor interfaces)
Develop an integrated approach to HSE and environmental risks and effects management across projects and contractors
Participate and provide inputs as required and ensure mitigating controls remain suitable and sufficient
Develop and implement HSES plans, procedures, and instructions as required by Contract and in line with corporate and legislative requirements
Manage, monitor, and advise on all matters related to the Environmental
Provide technical and commercial support during the tendering stage
Support the planning and execution of the internal environmental audit and compliance assurance programs
Monitor compliance against documented Environmental requirements through a systematic regime of the compliance audit, performance monitoring, and front-line inspections
Establish tangible and relevant Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to the area of responsibility, monitor compliance, and identify trends
Identify new and merge local and applicable environmental regulations and interpretation of their impact on the site/vessel business plan
Prepare and deliver permit applications and renewal, obtain clearances, consents, and authorization for executing the scope of work and in connection to compliance with statutory/legal requirements
Participate in subcontractor/vendor HSES pre-qualification and bid evaluation process
Review/approve subcontractors and vendors for equipment and services
Attend and provide input to forums such as kick-off meetings, constructability reviews, readiness reviews, emergency planning, etc
Lead / direct environmental investigations and Root Cause Analysis following incidents and or non-compliances
Ensure that corrective actions and recommendations are acted upon and ensure report completion for process and statutory requirements
Review and provide Environmental input to MOCs and Lessons Learned
Provide SME guidance to the production of HSES information, training, education, and awareness material for the Project and business line
Communicate with and advise senior management on issues and concerns relating to projects and site operations requiring Environmental support and guidance
Communicate, present, or justify overall Environmental performance to management as necessary
Proactive client interface
Coordinate Project Environmental activities Business travel as necessary to support project/operations requirements
Manage Environmental Performance Indicator data collection, ongoing reporting, tracking, and analysis
Implement and support communication and awareness of environmental initiatives and campaigns
Champion for and input to McDermott’s annual Sustainability Report and Questionnaires as requested
Essential Qualifications and Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Safety, or Engineering, Safety, or Environmental Science or related degree
Advanced education (i.e., MBA or other master’s level education) is preferred
7 to 8 years within the Energy or Construction Industry and preferably within EPCI project execution
Experience with technical activities, including onshore and offshore operations
Maintain key competencies associated with the Environmental function
Excellent communication and presentation skills, both written and spoken
Know and interpret local Environmental laws, codes, regulations, and norms
Trained and experienced ISO standards lead auditor (9001, 14001, 45001, or 50001)
Statistical and data analysis ability
Good interpersonal skills
Conflict Resolution skills and leadership skills
Master’s degree is preferred
Proficient in Microsoft programs: Word, Access, PowerPoint, Excel
Preferred project management experience
Preferred knowledge of RegScan, Intelex, FigBytes, and PowerBI platforms
